Extremity
Extremity
Extremity is a film that marks a silent space between us; social distancing, a concept that is difficult to follow as this boundary can’t be felt, seen, or heard. By drawing circles in the air to move the suspended microscopic particles of matter I am aiming to define this space by creating a vortex and the possibility that the boundary can be felt, seen and even heard.
The sculptural headdress was created to invent this space whist trying not to be intrusive to others. The sprung wires threaded with florescent beads use gravity to create movement giving the lightest of touch to define this space. If done correctly it is harmless but symbolises danger if they come to close to another person. The beads dance around the head to tease this peripheral space between us to define who’s space it is, is it yours or is it mine? Now with less discipline or guidance on how we can achieve social distancing, how can we support the clinically vulnerable who understandably feel nervous and are expected to calmly face society again? What is clear is that together with ventilation this circular space of Extremity is critical for every individual.
